Amid the global environmental crisis, \u2018waste\u2019 <\/strong>is often seen as merely the endpoint of consumption. However, for the World Vision Foundation of Thailand,<\/strong> waste represents the starting point of systemic development that can be redesigned to create economic and social value, as well as long-term behavioral change.<\/p>

The story of School in Chat Trakan District, Phitsanulok Province\u2014one of the schools in the area under a community development project aimed at self-reliance and sustainability\u2014reflects a transformation from a space facing accumulated waste problems to an \u2018environmental <\/strong>learning ecosystem\u2019<\/strong> truly driven by youth power.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

From \u2018overflowing waste problem\u2019 to \u2018upstream management system design\u2019<\/p>

\u201cWaste is pollution, and the problem keeps getting worse in the school,\u201d <\/em>said Miss Napassorn,<\/strong> or \u2018On,\u2019 <\/strong>a Grade 11 student council representative, describing the motivation that led them to take action and solve the issue themselves.<\/p>

As the school faced increasing waste from the cafeteria and daily activities\u2014affecting students\u2019 well-being, the school environment, and waste management behavior\u2014the student council played a crucial role in designing upstream management. They established a structured waste management system, categorizing waste into general waste, recyclables, and hazardous waste, and set up a \u2018waste bank\u2019 <\/strong>as a central mechanism for collection and connection to downstream processes. <\/em><\/p>

\u201cAt our school, we regularly organize activities to educate younger students about waste separation. We communicate after the morning national anthem ceremony or in the evening after school to help build understanding and environmental awareness among everyone in the school.<\/em><\/p>

In addition, the school has clearly labeled bins for waste separation so that everyone can dispose of waste correctly. <\/em>There are three main categories: general waste, recyclable paper and cardboard, and recyclable plastic bottles. There is also a hazardous waste bin (red bin) for items that require special handling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Transforming classrooms into hands-on learning spaces<\/strong><\/p>

Mrs. Wattana Kantravet, the school director, stated:<\/p>

\u201cThe World Vision Foundation of Thailand supports experiential learning in two key dimensions: building knowledge and awareness through hands-on training on waste separation and recycling, and supporting systems and equipment such as establishing a waste bank and management systems to create a revolving fund.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Students are not just recipients of knowledge but active implementers at every stage\u2014from collection and sorting to processing and utilization or sale. For example, they turn fallen leaves into organic fertilizer and planting soil and generate income from recyclable materials. This process transforms \u2018waste\u2019 <\/strong>from a burden into both a learning resourceand <\/strong>an economic resource.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
