Severe flooding across Nan Province has caused extensive damage to community water supply systems and municipal pipeline networks. Several sections of the pipelines were damaged by floodwaters, while others were dismantled during recovery operations involving heavy machinery to clear and remove mud and debris, cutting off water supplies to local households.<\/p>

At the same time, shallow wells traditionally used as backup water sources for the community have been filled with large amounts of mud and sand carried in by the floodwaters, leaving them contaminated and unusable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u201cIt will likely take at least a month before things return to normal because the municipal water pipeline system must be fully reinstalled before water can be routed to each household. Right now, the distribution lines have all been torn out,\u201d <\/em>Uncle Jaran,<\/strong> a local resident affected by the disaster, expressing deep concern.<\/p>


For Uncle Jaran, the hardship is not merely the waiting, but the daily struggle to secure water for his family\u2019s everyday needs when nearly every local water source has been compromised.<\/p>


\u201cWe\u2019re looking into ways to fix the shallow well. It would be a great help if relevant agencies could assist in cleaning the well and pumping the water out, because right now it\u2019s full of mud and silt. It is very difficult. It could take days or even months before we can use the water again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Even with a river flowing directly through the community, it currently offers no relief. The water remains murky and heavily laden with sediment, mud, and debris carried by the floodwaters, rendering it completely unfit for drinking or domestic use.<\/p>

\u201cRight now, the river water is unusable due to high turbidity. For bathing and household chores, we have to rely on water distributed by the municipality, which still falls short of our daily needs because many homes only have small storage tanks. In my case, I even have to borrow water from acquaintances in neighboring villages,\u201d <\/em>Uncle Jaran added.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Post-Flood Reality: Waiting for Every Drop of Water<\/strong><\/p>

Like many local families, Ms. Chanphen, <\/strong>another survivor of the disaster, shared how daily life has been upended following the disaster, particularly due to the acute domestic water shortage.<\/p>

\u201cNormally, we rely on piped tap water, but since the flood, we haven\u2019t had any. Right now, we have to go to the local temple just to bathe. For household use, we must wait for government water trucks to fill our containers so we can get by day to day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

She explained that no one in the community can predict when tap water services will be restored, while hardships persist across virtually every household.<\/p>

\u201cAs for the piped water, we don\u2019t know if it will be restored in a month. Almost every household is struggling because most villagers depend primarily on the municipal water supply.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u201cThe water rose so fast; I\u2019ve never seen anything like this in my life. My father is in his seventies, and he has never experienced an event like this before either. All our household belongings and appliances, like the refrigerator, were completely ruined. There\u2019s no well at my mother\u2019s house either, so we rely on donated bottled water for drinking. Living without water is extremely difficult\u2014we have no water for bathing and none for the toilet,\u201d<\/em> Ms. Chanphen continued.<\/p>

The lack of clean water following a disaster not only affects daily life but also impacts the health, hygiene, and quality of life of children, the elderly, and vulnerable households. Providing clean drinking and utility water, alongside rehabilitating community water sources, is an urgent priority to ensure survivors can rebuild their lives safely and with dignity.<\/p>
