The dream fulfilled: Teacher Oom, the favourite science teacher of Ban Nam Puk (Read in Thai)

Because we were not born equal…some were born to well-to-do families while the others were not so lucky. Yet, with a good heart as the propellant, a life goal set to achieve, and action taken with ones’ full potential, the paucity is not an obstacle too big to overcome for ones to reach life transformation towards well-being. Many have posted examples to show that with a proper goal set and an earnest action taken, ones can eventually become successful…just like Phimphakan, a determined, young lady from Phayao province, who has persevered and finally got a Bachelor of Education and become a science teacher as she wishes. Many have posted examples to show that with a proper goal set and an earnest action taken, ones can eventually become successful…just like Phimphakan, a determined, young lady from Phayao province, who has persevered and finally got a Bachelor of Education and become a science teacher as she wishes.

Over ten years ago, Oom or Phimphakan was a poor little girl from a remote village of Khun Khuan sub-district. Her parents worked as farmers and hired hands. Earning very little, they had a huge burden in paying for Oom to go to school in town. She almost missed her educational opportunity due to this.

Fortunately, with the generosity from her sponsor who had been supporting her through the Child Sponsorship Progrmme since she was in primary school until she completed high school, plus the continued support from the Bachelor’s Degree Project by World Vision Foundation of Thailand (WVFT), which supports poor students who have outstanding academic performance to pursue bachelor degrees, today Phimphakan is a government teacher under the 2018’s Teachers for Local Development Project. Her dream job as a school science teacher in her hometown has been fulfilled.

“When I was young, I remember I didn’t have any school uniform to wear,” Oom , now a 23-year-old young lady, recalled. She was born and raised in Ban Nam Puk, Pha Chang Noi district, Phayao province. Thanks to the kind sponsor and the caring Pha Chang Noi Project staff, she received new school uniforms to wear to school along with school supplies, school bag, and tuition fee. She was supported to join the life skill development camp and the moral leadership promotion camp. Oom was in the school’s petanque team and also represented her province in a petanque competition. During her college years, she joined the Local Community Development Club and attended many annual volunteer community development trips. She said the support through the decade greatly helped lessen her parents’ burdens.

Oom said: “When I was about to complete grade 12, I wanted to continue studying in a university, but my family couldn’t afford that due to our financial difficulties. Fortunately, because I had always paid attention at studying and had good academic performance, I was awarded the scholarship from WVFT. It paid for my university education until I graduated. Without the support, I wouldn’t have graduated as I wish.”

Oom’s day of the highest pride was the day she graduated and got registered as a teacher to develop her beloved community. In 2017, she’s graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Naresuan University, Faculty of Education in Biology and been registered as a government teacher in the position of an assistant teacher to teach grade 1-6 science subjects at Ban Rong Maet School, Phayao province, her own hometown. “Due to the severe shortage of science teachers here, I’ve volunteered to teach the primary school students to learn about the natural surroundings and systematic ways to study things based on scientific methodologies with proper rationale and evidence, which can be proved by the empirical process,” Oom shared about her determination.

Oom said she wanted to become a better teacher. Since the opportunity has arrived, she wishes to best fulfill her job for the benefits of students. What she’s planned to enable that is to pursue a master’s degree to broaden her knowledge and expertise in the teaching profession.

“I’d like to thank my sponsor and thank WVFT for fulfilling my dream. Today I have an opportunity to be a teacher. My family also has improved well-being,” Teacher Oom thanked with a smile from her heart.
