May 15 of every is marked by the United Nations as the International Day of Families, to raise awareness of the importance of families, based on the belief that a good society begins with a warm and loving family. Sadly, however, the situation of violence in Thai society has been worsening every year.
According to data from the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development, in 2024, an average of 42 people per day were reported as victims of violence, with 4,833 cases specifically involving domestic violence. The main causes were drug abuse, stress due to economic situation, and mental health issues. This situation serves as a warning sign that it is time for all sectors to work together to end violence in society.
World Vision Foundation of Thailand recognises the importance of this issue and has implemented the ‘Celebrating Families and Child Protection’ project. Thanks to the training, parents have gained a better understanding of how to raise their children and protect others in the community, especially through a key concept called ‘Reflecting on the Past, Embracing the Present, and Following Dreams.’ This approach helps them revisit their own childhood experiences, leading to more thoughtful and positive parenting choices.
The activities also covered other important topics such as recognising signs of well-being and conflict, the five love languages used in families—physical touch, quality time, gift-giving, acts of service, and words of affirmation—as well as techniques for positive discipline, knowledge of children’s rights, and conflict resolution within the family.
Somchai, one of the parents who participated in the activity, shared: “This was my first time attending the training. I loved it. The Celebrating Families and Child Protection training was engaging and not boring at all. It was fun, yet filled with valuable lessons on parenting and child protection. I had a great time and gained a lot of knowledge from the training.”
World Vision Thailand remains committed to addressing family-related issues, empowering families, and promoting child protection, so that every child can live a happy and fulfilling life. We believe that healthy relationships within the family are fundamental for reducing violence and creating a sustainable, livable society.
